Sunnyside & Woodside MA on Instagram: "Drivers are key to making sure our weekly pop up pantries can happen! Drive along with awesome SWMA member @vitalmountain as he shows us what a driving shift looks like. SWMA is always looking for more drivers to ensure our pantries can happen! DM us if you have any questions about joining SWMA or any of the weekly volunteer shifts in the bio"
Our main storage is hosted at St. Jacobus Church. All driving duties are either
-
Bringing new food/supplies to St Jacobus
-
Bringing food/supplies from St. Jacobus to one of our Saturday Pantry Tables
-
Bringing leftover supplies from pantry tabling BACK to St Jacobus
1. Bringing new food/supplies to St Jacobus
We have two routine sources of food/supplies
- The Connected Chef - they deliver the produce to the church, no driver needed
- One Community - this happens Saturday mornings before pre-pantry, and appears as “SWMA x One Community Food Rescue”
Shifts
- SWMA x One Community Food Rescue - Driver
- SWMA x One Community Food Rescue - Helper (Driver shift must be filled)
- These shifts requires an additional sign up through One Community
- Packing - Navy Yard - SAT AM
- Driving - Navy Yard-Pick Up Sites - SAT AM
- Pickup address: One Community, BUILDING 3, 141 Flushing Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205, USA
- You will receive an email with more instructions and a pass to enter the navy yard lot. The helper shift technically starts at 8 but they know to expect us later. You can just let them know that you are with SWMA when you confirm your attendance.
- The expectation is that we will transport produce for their pantry and in exchange they give us some of their excess produce. This is labor intensive, so on weeks where our driver capacity is low, Mark C. will ask if we can pick up produce without completing a shift.
- Process
- The driver and helper (if applicable) coordinate a time to leave the neighborhood. Recommend to leave around X:XX.
- Drive to One Community, BUILDING 3, 141 Flushing Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205, USA.
- There is a gate on Cumberland street; be prepared to show your QR code from the confirmation email. Drive around to the front of building 3, you should see people moving produce.
- Quincy is the point person for One Community. Tell him that you’re with SWMA and he will direct you. This is generally the process:
- One Community volunteers will bring food down to the loading dock and load them into your car.
- You will drive the produce to one of their distribution locations. Volunteers will help you unload produce.
- You return to One Community, be prepared to show your QR code at the gate again, and make more trips depending on how many drivers they have that day.
- Once driving for their pantry is done, you’ll return to One Community to collect the produce for SWMA.
- Bring and unload the produce at St. Jacobus. Send a message in slack detailing the type and number of produce. If this shift is paired with driving to a pantry location, load up the pantry table supplies
